We have identified 10 skill areas that we consider to be the science of project management. For any existing project manager the items in this list should be fairly self-explanatory so we will not elaborate on each here. In no particular order the skill areas of “Science” are:
We have identified 10 skill areas which we consider the “Art” of project management. Being skilled in the traditional areas of project management may allow someone to effectively “administrate” a project. The problem is that even if all these skill items are performed with proficiency, there are many opportunities for complex projects to fail. So what is missing? The Art!
Team Management - The art of building and managing a team means understanding each person’s strengths and weaknesses, their personality and behavioural tendencies, and their opinions about the project and the other team members.
Business Savvy - Understanding the nature of project sponsors, champions and the motivation of each of those individuals will help you greatly on any difficult project.
Problem Solving - Advanced problem solving involves analysis to separate the problem from the symptoms, followed by a series of separate creative and critical thinking sessions to optimize the ideas generated.
Strategic Thinking - Strategic planning is the skill of selecting and executing against existing strategies, whereas strategic thinking is the development of new approaches using creativity.
Marketing and Spin Control - Project marketing involves the job of persuading people to follow and support your cause throughout the project. Spin control is the difficult task of communicating bad news about the project in such a way that the entire project will not be sabotaged.
Leadership Skills - The art of leadership involves knowing when to delegate, when to jump in, when to coach, and when to keep your opinions to yourself.
Negotiating Skills - The PM has to value the objectives of the project while finding a way to get the other party what they want.
Mediation Skills - The fine art of knowing when to push, when they need to pull, when to present, when to persuade and when to be quiet are all pieces of the mediation puzzle.
Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity – The PM needs to understand the working styles of the team itself and then understanding the cultures and natural preferences of the stakeholders with which the team will be interacting with.
Training - It’s important for any project manager to learn how to design effective training and also how to deliver training efficiently.

China has made it easier recently for corporations to set up Wholly Owned Foreign Enterprises (WOFEs). Companies no longer need to dance around the Representative Office (Branch Office) limitations of the past. Multinationals are moving in quickly, some more successfully than others, but that is par for the course. What China in general accomplishes in terms of sheer industry size and growth with numbers, it still struggles with the tactics of international marketing and establishing the right partnerships and distribution channels outside the country. We are pleased to be helping companies fill this strategic gap and as a result of the demand for our services, we are embarking on a venture to establish our own subsidiary and local office or potentially offices within regions of the country that most require our services. Look for more news in the future about our China expansion plans. TWN. Thomas W. Nash is the Chairman and CEO of Xalles Limited, with offices in the US, Canada, Ireland, Brazil and Ghana.
